Flash or Recover Lockbox Firmware

Reinstall Lockbox firmware with Web Serial, choose erase behavior, verify success, and recover safely.

Only flash your device if instructed to do so by Research and Desire support. If you're experiencing issues, contact support@researchanddesire.com first.

Video transcript

The video demonstrates connecting the Lockbox to a desktop computer with a data-capable USB-C cable, opening the web flasher in a Chromium browser, selecting the Lockbox serial device, choosing whether to preserve or erase local device data, starting the installation, and waiting for the Lockbox to restart. The written procedure below includes the same actions and the recovery checks.

When to flash your device

Flashing reinstalls the firmware and can resolve:

  • Device continuously restarting on its own (power cycling or boot loop)
  • Device freezing when pressing menu buttons
  • Unresponsive screens or buttons after waking from sleep
  • Software glitches that persist after a hard reset

Before flashing, try a hard reset first: hold the Enter/Lock button for 10 seconds. If the issue persists, proceed with flashing.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have:

  • A USB-C cable that supports data transfer (not just charging)
  • A computer with an available USB-C port
  • Google Chrome or another Chromium-based browser
  • The firmware channel and version that support instructed you to install
  • A record of the current physical lock state and whether local data may be erased

Some USB-C cables only support charging. If your device isn't detected, try a different cable that supports data transfer.

Web flasher

Use Chrome or Edge on a desktop computer

Connect the Lockbox with a data-capable USB-C cable. Web Serial is not available in Safari, Firefox, or mobile browsers.

Open the dedicated LKBX Web Flasher.

Flashing instructions

Step 1: Connect your device

Plug the USB-C cable into your Chastity Lockbox and connect the other end to your computer.

Step 2: Open the web flasher

Use the LKBX Web Flasher.

Step 3: Connect to your device

Click Connect and select the device labeled USB JTAG Serial Debug (or similar) from the list.

If no device appears, verify your cable supports data transfer and try a different USB port.

Step 4: Choose whether to erase device data

When prompted with the Erase device checkbox:

ChoiceLocal resultUse when
Leave uncheckedAttempts to preserve local settings and state while reinstalling firmwareSupport asks for a normal reinstall
Check eraseClears local settings and calibration and requires setup againSupport explicitly asks for a full reset

The current documentation says dashboard pairing is preserved, but the visible setup state can vary after recovery. Confirm the device in My Devices after it restarts and contact support before removing or re-pairing it.

Step 5: Complete the flash

Click Next to begin the flash process. Wait for it to complete.

Once complete, your device restarts. If you erased the device, it displays the calibration screen—see the calibration guide for next steps. If you didn't erase, the device returns to normal operation.

Verify recovery

  1. Confirm the browser reports a completed installation before disconnecting USB.
  2. Wait for the Lockbox to restart.
  3. Complete Calibration if prompted.
  4. Confirm the device is physically unlocked before testing.
  5. Check Wi-Fi, dashboard pairing, and one unlocked lock/unlock cycle.

If installation fails, keep the Lockbox connected to stable USB power, close other serial applications, reopen Chrome or Edge, and try the supported package once more. If the serial device is still absent or the second attempt fails, stop and contact support with the browser message. Do not guess another firmware package or channel.
